Homily – Second Sunday of Lent Year B – The Transfiguration

Posted by frmac on March 7, 2009

(Readings: Gen. 22: 1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18; Psalm 116; Rom. 8: 31b-34; Mark 9: 2-10)

This Sunday’s Gospel portrays Jesus with Peter, James, and John at the top of a Mountain. In a an instant Jesus’ clothes becomes dazzling white, “as no one on earth could bleach them.”

Jesus has led them to this location and this experience for a reason. He has just told them that he will be rejected, suffer, and die in Jerusalem, and that he will rise again. This, they just don’t seem to understand or accept, and Jesus wants them too. It is so important, he knows, that they realize who he is and what he is doing. If they don’t, they will not be able to live and proclaim the good news that he has come to give the world.

It is an understatement to say that the three apostles were impressed, terrified, and even ecstatic on the mountain top that day with Jesus. “It is good for us to be here,” says Peter, “let us build three tents….”Then a cloud overshadows them and from the cloud a voice speaks: “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to Him.”

Put your self in the apostles shoes that day. Wow, what an experience. Moses and Elijah were even there, and then the voice – the voice of God telling them that Jesus was his beloved son and telling them that they should listen to him.

Then Jesus returns to his normal self and leads them down the mountain, and immediately immerses himself in the crowds and cures a young boy.

Is this not a marvellous revelation of who our God really is and how much God loves us? It is not about a God who is content to stay on a mountain top and offer down a helping hand to a poor broken world, but about a God who immerses himself in the messiness and brokenness of the human situation. It is about a God who gets his hands dirty, and calls us to do the same. Today’s Gospel could never be forgotten by the three apostles that Jesus invited on that day, and it is a lesson that we must all remember and reflect upon during lent.

This Sunday Jesus invites us once again to the mountain top to perceive the glory, and to be transformed by the word, and in the blessing and breaking and sharing of the bread and the wine – the body and blood of Christ. Then as we leave this beautiful place with our family, friends and neighbours, we are invited by Jesus down the mountain to share the vision, and to enter the messiness of every day life,  and with God’s grace to make this beautiful broken world a better place.
